Day trip from Rome: Montefalco in Umbria charms the lovers of beauty and Italian cuisine

Beautiful green uphill landscapes, vineyards and olive groves – the idyllic little medieval town Montefalco in the region of Umbria is pure pleasure for the lovers of beauty and Italian cuisine.

What I love about Italy is, that every city and town has its very own atmosphere. Just 150 kilometers drive away from Rome to Montefalco, the ambiance changed into a certain kind of romantic, quiet and peaceful that I haven´t experienced in other places in Italy. I felt that this hidden countryside gem would be a perfect place for a romantic holiday with someone special…

I only had one day, but it made me curious to discover more about the region of Umbria. Next time I would love to spend time also in cities like Perugia and Assisi which are less than an hour's drive away from Montefalco.

As Umbria is a well-known wine region, we started our Sunday by getting to know the secrets of Umbrian wines in a winery called Scacciadiavoli, which is the oldest winery in Montefalco, founded in 1884. And oh, of course we didn´t miss the wine tasting. My favourites were red wines Montefalco Rosso and Montefalco Sagrantino, and the rich and elegant white wine Trebbiano Spolentino.

Beauty in every corner.

Loving the narrow streets in the historic center of Montefalco.

After the wine tasting, we drove to the historic center of Montefalco for a walk and to shop for local goodies like wines, cheese and honey. I bought Umbrian DOP-extra virgin olive oil from Marfuga and Italian organic olive oil-based beauty products from Oro di Spello (good stuff, all gone already).

As I was on a trip with fifteen Italian friends, the rest of the day – not kidding, five, if not six hours – was spent having lunch in an Umbrian restaurant. I love to spend time with the locals since I get to discover the best places and experience the traditions in the most authentic ways – so thank you, the sisters of the family Corradini, for this unforgettable Umbrian experience!

To mention, non of the recommendations in this post are sponsored, they are just genuinely good places worth visiting. Another mentionable place is Ristorante Il Coccorone, where we enjoyed traditional Umbrian dishes. In 2013 this restaurant was awarded by Travellers Choice -award from Trip Advisor as one of the four best restaurants in Italy, and obviously, it hasn´t lost its quality and charm.

An Italian-style lunch.
