The best beaches near Rome: A daytrip to Sperlonga
One of my favourite places near Rome is definitely Sperlonga, a cute little coastal village 148 kilometers south from Rome. Its long white sandy beach with clear shallow waters must be the best beach near Rome, and even one of the best beaches in whole Italy.
When I feel the need to get out of the office, I tend to take a train from Rome to Sperlonga. The beauty of the place is that you don’t need to plan or do anything special, the day goes well just by hanging barefoot and carefree by the beach.
Be sure to take your camera with you, since the village is absolutely picturesque and the beach is made to catch the most beautiful sunsets.
Depending on the schedules, the trip from Roma Termini railway station to Sperlonga takes at least two hours. First, the train to Fondi-Sperlonga station takes one and a half hours, the bus to the village of Sperlonga takes 20 minutes, and then you have a 10-minute walk to the beach. Prepare to be patient, since the bus runs only a few times a day. The good side of it is, that when Sperlonga is not the easiest place to reach, it´s peaceful, especially off-season.
For a vacation without any timetables, the town offers a variety of lovely little hotels and B&B places by the sea. There’s so much beauty around that you’ll easily want to stay for longer.
Up on the hill, in the narrow alleys of the old town, you’ll find small romantic bars and restaurants, and cute shops selling local foods, clothes and handmade ceramics and jewellery. Another adorable place to visit in the old town is a small chapel, Cappella di San Rocco. It’s literally a small room, with an astonishing view of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
